WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF HPV IN MEN?

Symptoms of HPV in men usually manifest themselves in the genital area. The vast majority of men with HPV do not have any symptoms or health problems. Condyloma lesions, called warts, can occur in parts of the body where there is sexual contact such as the penis, scrotum, groin, between the legs or anus, as well as in the head, neck and oral area where contact may occur during sexual intercourse. However, these warts can appear weeks or even months after sexual contact with the person with the wart. When warts start to appear, they can appear individually or in groups. When they come together or start to grow, their shape resembles cauliflower. They can be colorless or brown or reddish in color. They do not cause pain and are partially hard.

In men, warts on the penis, anus, oral cavity, head and neck may show symptoms suspicious for cancer. These include bleeding, pain, itching and enlarged lymph nodes around the anus, discoloration of the penis, tissue growth on the penis and sores on the penis. It is characterized by persistent burning in the mouth and throat, persistent earache, persistent cough, weight loss, and prolonged coarsening of the voice.

HOW IS HPV TREATED IN MEN?

HPV treatment in men is planned to remove warts from the body and strengthen the immune system. HPV treatment starts with the removal of warts. Since there is a risk of recurrence of warts that have been removed, it continues with immune-boosting treatments and measures to be taken in daily life, such as avoiding polygamous sexual life, using condoms during sexual intercourse and paying attention to personal hygiene. If the process does not proceed in this way, HPV warts that have been removed may reappear in the person.

Genital warts in men can be removed with medication, surgery, burning or freezing. There is no difference in effectiveness between these methods.

WHAT SHOULD MEN WATCH OUT FOR HPV?

Many men are not sufficiently aware that genital warts can cause serious health problems that need to be treated. Being aware of this issue is very important for the health of both the person and the environment they come into contact with. In addition, another important issue that men should know about HPV is that the HPV positivity rate of men found to be infertile (infertile) is 5 times higher than that of men who are not infertile, that is, HPV is a cause of infertility.

The HPV vaccine is highly effective in preventing the risk of developing HPV and the cancers it causes in men as well as women. The HPV vaccine has a high protective effect when administered to people who have not yet been exposed to human papillomavirus, for example children. For these reasons, getting the HPV vaccine at a young age significantly reduces the risk of the individual encountering this infection, thus preventing many problems that may arise in the future by taking protection in advance.

Apart from insemination, it is also important for men to take measures in sexual life. Avoiding polygamous sexual life and using condoms are important measures against HPV, but it should be kept in mind that it is not possible to definitively prevent HPV transmission by using condoms.

Finally, we should say that if one of the partners has HPV infection, the risk of transmission to the other is quite high, it is important for men to have an HPV DNA test and frequently check the symptoms, to lead a single-partner sexual life and to use condoms to prevent health problems for themselves as well as their wives/partners.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF HPV TREATMENT?

The HPV-infected individual will be informed by the doctor about the course of treatment. Some of the treatment methods for removing warts from the body are as follows:

Cautery is a pen-like instrument with a needle tip. By touching the area where the warts are located, an electric current is passed through it and the warts are dried in this way.

Radiofrequency, which has become widespread in medicine with the advancement of technology, is also used in the removal of warts. HPV wart treatment with radiofrequency is similar to cautery treatment.

Cryotherapy is the name given to the freezing process. In the freezing process applied to the wart area at very low temperatures, the warts swell a little and then dry up and fall off.

In surgical methods, local anesthesia is applied and the warts are cut off.

Keratolytic agents can be used to dry the warts together with the HPV virus inside.
